Independence Square, which for decades has been used as a parking lot, has been redeveloped into a civic square. The redeveloped area reflects the historical significance of the island’s independence and includes hard and soft landscaping, an outdoor amphitheatre and lighting.
At the centre of focus of this city landmark is the Statue of The Right Excellent Errol Walton Barrow, the first Prime Minister of Barbados, National Hero and Father of Barbados’ Independence.
The new Independence Square and the Statue of The Right Excellent Errol Walton Barrow were unveiled on January 22, 2007, Errol Barrow Day.
